Given how incomplete the game is in regards to combat and class mechanics, I'm unsure how appropriate skill use rewards are. Unless you're playing the new FOTM or have the right friends, you won't get much. Kinda like how peddles currently work.

At least they aren't stat raises though. Glad it was another success.

I'd agree with you Shadowbane, but the games were for the most part team based games and randomly chosen teams. A lot of it was luck on what random team members you got. It certainly wasn't "whoever gets the mage on their team wins" type thing, although mages remained important. We also did a melee only at the end, although I think slow spells should have been banned on that as well.

Yeah, I hate FFAs. Lots of running around doesn't appeal to me, which is why I like the team based stuff.

Edited to correct, technically teams were chosen after a random coin toss. Which meant that generally higher damage dealers, etc. were chosen first. Maybe they should indeed be totally randomly chosen. I dunno.

Even losing players/teams got tokens so I'm perfectly fine with this system, especially if it ends up encouraging people to come and participate more. Even low-leveled characters, while they probably won't win much, can benefit hugely from the uses gained through the PvP itself and through tokens to raise skills a bit more, as well as being able to practice combat in an environment where death doesn't cost them anything.

While I enjoy FFAs I agree the running around isn't super appealing, and the beginning stages where the whole area is open is kind of pointless because of that reason. With the delay from moving rooms, I can't even land an attack on someone I run into before they take off.

Or if you volunteer for captain and pick your team, if you're a better strategist, if in FFAs you team up with the right people or target the right people, etc, etc. Games are random. Every class can be beaten in a team game (though there are some concerns about recent priest adjustments but that is another topic entirely and also goes hand in hand with spell evolution and melee range still not being fixed and this should be another thread so I wont derail). It'd also help if people online actually attended. More people in the games means more randomization and DPS toward specific people. Some people don't like games, it's true, but it's fun to try something new and it's a low population and people should support the events other players specifically hold. But maybe for those who don't like games they'll end up finding something better.

Ideally people would not need prizes to attend, or we would get RP items again, but considering Visyn has done a good job of mixing up the games and offering a variety of them, no specific people accumulate the top token the whole night. The top people also offer to sit in some cases when there are uneven numbers for team games, but the rest of us try to ensure everyone is able to play games. Because having fun is much more important than a miniscule one thousand uses that can only be used at the end of a level. It isn't really game breaking, and I thank Visyn for his hosting the games to give the community something to do among the critique of not enough to do.

Sometimes people can't devote the focus necessary for an event, you can't really fault them for being online and not attending. Maybe they don't like the people drawn to events and prefer to keep to themselves and a select few. Regardless of the why, some people just aren't fans of big events. If people want events to have a bigger draw, the community has to grow and the members have to make them enjoyable enough

I didn't say it was game breaking, but I think rp items or containers and clothing would be more appropriate. I'm glad even the losers got something. Like I've said before, Visyn does good work and I'm glad he stepped up. It gives players something else to look forward to so staff can work on improving the game without having to constantly entertain us.

Good work, Visyn.

Those are all individual choices, though. No I can't fault them for not attending (though I can, actually, if they've previously complained about not enough events), but likewise they then cannot begrudge the manner of rewards handed out to people who do attend simply because.. they themselves are not attending for personal reasons. On the other hand, a community cannot grow if the members already within said community do not attend events which are held for the purpose of engaging, entertaining and growing the community. A solid foundation of a consistent number of participants must be laid for the groundwork of growth. I'm never going to beat a mage one on one, and that is fine with me. I will never beat a priest one on one because they can, and should be able to, out heal me. And that is fine with me. Competition is fun, absolutely a great time for me because I'm a competitive person. But even more fun is being silly or interacting with other people in an environment which isn't in-character. You don't have to like everyone who attends, but that doesn't keep a person from interacting with the people they do like or they don't know and may end up liking by having attended an event.

Largely a matter of preference on that last part.

I don't begrudge anyone the rewards they receive for whatever it is they do. They showed up, they participated, they get a prize (I actually disagree with THAT particular line of thinking, but whatever). I have nothing against that, really, and I don't think I can simplify that any more.

I am also competitive. However, my competitiveness has minimal impact on my desire (or lack of) to participate in something when I have something else that needs my attention and focus more. The same may apply for others as well. You are correct in saying that a solid foundation is needed for growth, however, I believe the solid foundation comes not from numbers of participants in any one event, but the health of the community and the quality of interaction between members. If we need to reward people with skill uses instead of rp items for simply participating (not winning), I don't think it's the events, quantity or quality or rewards in them, that need to be looked at.

I'm not ragging on Visyn, believe me. I think he's doing a fantastic job and I imagine staff are extremely grateful. It's great that he's volunteered to do this for folks and fill in a gap here and there. I'm also not here to tear up Xiija's thread with a debate. I offered feedback and deserved praise, nothing more. I'm looking forward to others I can hopefully attend, and want to see them succeed.

The games are a great idea, and a good way for people to get to know
the folks they are RPing with. It also helps let off steam if you have
been in intense RP with people. Also, as we saw saturday, it helps
the staff and community get a good look at the new stuff and how
it will work in a pvp setting. As for the tokens, i did'nt win much,
but still got 1 1/2 to 2 hrs worth of skill uses in tokens. hey, every little bit
helps :P
( P.S. do we assist to use tokens??? )

The main point of this post was to thank Kryger/Visyn for steppin up and doing
a great job, and to let people know that there are OOC games once a month.
the advertising for the games may have been a little lacking this time around :P

::hugs all ::
:P

You do not assist with tokens. Staff will make scheduled and unscheduled announcements to redeem tokens, along with attending game nights when possible to redeem at the end.

We are extremely grateful to Kryger for taking it upon himself to provide players with this outlet. The prizes are appropriate for the venue and not that much when you think about it. Maybe a couple thousand uses once or twice a month with everyone getting something (there are no losers).

Congrats on another successful night.
